ORTHOBIOLOGICS

What are Orthobiologics?
Orthobiologics encompass a wide variety of naturally occurring substances in our bodies such as cells, tissue, blood components and growth factors that are harnessed to aid in the treatment of orthopedic injuries or conditions. Many patients with orthopedic injuries or conditions do not see improvement with conservative management such as therapy, activity modification, bracing, and medications. For those patients who fail conservative management, want to avoid surgery, and would like to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, othobiologic treatment may be the ideal treatment option for them.

We offer advanced regenerative medicine treatments that augment and boost the body’s ability to heal naturally in order to renew, repair, and restore worn joints and ligaments, alleviate osteoarthritis, and help heal sports injuries. We have a very strict commitment to evidence-based medicine and only make recommendations based on the best available scientific evidence which is always evolving. We currently utilize Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) – the gold standard source of mesenchymal stem cells – as our orthobiologic therapies.

What is PRP?
PRP is a type of orthobiologic treatment that utilizes the body's own natural healing abilities to accelerate and augment healing after an orthopedic injury or condition.  PRP is obtained from your own blood through a standard blood draw, and is then processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors that enhance healing and reduce inflammation.

PRP injections are safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment option for patients with certain orthopedic conditions such as injured ligaments, tendons, muscles, or arthritis. PRP may be injected directly into the damaged tissue in the office or during surgery to augment healing and recovery.

Specifically, PRP is a component of the blood that contains a high concentration of platelets which naturally move toward an injured in area and release growth factors to help healing.  These growth factors help stimulate cellular growth and accelerated healing.  By injecting only the platelet rich portion of the blood which contains growth factors, it is thought that this may help with the healing process and alleviate pain

What is Stem Cell Treatment?
Stem cell treatments encompass a wide variety of treatment options, some of which are backed by solid scientific evidence and others with little to no scientific backing. Dr. Kandil only performs procedures with high quality peer-reviewed scientific studies and for orthopedic conditions, the gold standard stem cell treatment is bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), which contains adult stem cells. The evidence is growing, but is not as advanced as that for other orthobiologic treatments such as PRP.

BMAC is obtained after processing bone marrow that is removed from your own bone. BMAC is rich in adult mesenchymal stem cells as well as other proteins and growth factors necessary for healing and reducing inflammation.
BMAC injections are safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment option for patients with certain orthopedic conditions, primarily knee arthritis at this time. BMAC is injected directly into the arthritic knee in the office.

Specifically, BMAC is a procedure that results in collection of bone marrow that contains a high concentration of adult mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors.  These stem cells and growth factors help stimulate cellular growth and accelerate healing.
