PATELLA FRACTURE KANDILNOTES
INTRODUCTION
-
A patella fracture is a break in the kneecap bone
-
The patella (kneecap) is a part of the extensor mechanism of the knee, allowing you to straighten your knee
-
The classification system for patella fractures is descriptive and depends on the location of the fracture on the bone
-
2:1 Male to Female Ratio
CAUSES
-
Patella fractures usually are traumatic and usually occur due to direct impact onto the kneecap
-
Can sometimes occur with eccentric knee straightening with the quadriceps in tension
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
-
Patella fractures are associated with immediate pain and swelling
-
Inability to straighten the knee
TREATMENT
-
Patella Fracture treatment depends on fracture type and displacement (separation of the fracture pieces)
-
Patella fractures without significant separation of the fracture pieces and that don't affect your ability to straighten the knee can often be managed without surgery
-
Non-surgical management consists of either cast or knee brace locked in extension with protected weight bearing. This is followed by progressive bending of the knee under physical therapy guidance
-
Patella fractures with significant separation of the fracture pieces and that affect your ability to straighten the knee are usually managed without surgery
-
Surgery consists of repair of the fracture pieces with screws, sutures, metal wires, or a combination of the above
